  12.  
  13.           This paper describes the process and products available to
  14.           migrate current customers of HP LAN Manager for OS/2 and
  15.           MS/DOS Version 1.0 or 1.1 (hereafter HP LAN Manager 1.X) to
  16.           Microsoft LAN Manager 2.1.  The upgrade will be available
  17.           from Microsoft for HP's customers.  Microsoft LAN Manager 2.1
  18.           will include a TCP/IP transport developed by HP for
  19.           Microsoft.  Microsoft LAN Manager 2.1 will be able to replace
  20.           HP LAN Manager 1.X as an OS/2 based LAN Manager server in an
  21.           HP systems environment.

  33.           This upgrade program is for HP customers who currently own
  34.           one of the following:

  36.              D1809A   HP LAN Manager 1.0 Five User License
  37.              D1809B   HP LAN Manager 1.1 Five User License
  38.              D1810A   HP LAN Manager 1.0 Unlimited User License
  39.              D1810B   HP LAN Manager 1.1 Unlimited User License

  41.           The upgrade will migrate customers from an HP LAN Manager
  42.           Unlimited or Five User License server to a Microsoft LAN
  43.           Manager 2.1 Unlimited License server.
  44.  
  45.           HP's Support Subscription Service does not apply to this
  46.           upgrade program.

  48.           The upgrade from HP LAN Manager 1.X to Microsoft LAN Manager
  49.           2.1 will be sold by  Microsoft Authorized Network

  78.           The upgrade, known as the Global Update LAN Program, upgrades
  79.           either HP LAN Manager 1.X or 3Com 3+Open customers to
  80.           Microsoft LAN Manager 2.1  This package includes the
  81.           following:
  82.  
  83.              Microsoft LAN Manager 2.1, including TCP/IP transport,
  84.                 unlimited user license
  85.              OS/2 version 1.31
  86.              Information about migrating specifically for the HP LAN
  87.                 Manager 1.X customer
  88.              A Toolkit for migrating HP LAN Manager 1.0 or 3Com 3+Open
  89.                 networks to Microsoft 2.1 LAN Manager

  91.           Features and Benefits of Microsoft LAN Manager 2.1
  92.           --------------------------------------------------

  94.           * Enhanced Security.  Each network resource can be controlled
  95.           (directories, subdirectories, individual files, print queues
  96.           and peripherals), and each user access after initial logon is
  97.           transparently checked for access rights.  Passwords are
  98.           government DES encrypted; account control lets you specify
  99.           valid logon times, valid workstations, and account expiration
  100.           dates as well as password length and age; secure shell and
  101.           local security controls protect network resources against
  102.           unauthorized access; network auditing selectively tracks
  103.           network resource use.
  104.  
  105.           * Advanced multiserver administration tools:
  106.  
  107.           Domains enable you to administer multiple servers as one
  108.              unit.
  109.           Groups allow you to set privileges across multiple
  110.              resources for multiple users in one step.
  111.           Replicator server automatically duplicates changes made
  112.              to designated files to other designated servers or
  113.              OS/2 workstations.

  115.           * Transports: NetBEUI, DLC and TCP/IP.

  117.           The TCP/IP transport is included for access between Microsoft
  118.           LAN Manager 2.1 clients and servers.  This transport will
  119.           also provide the networking foundation for LAN Manager 2.1
  120.           clients to access HP systems and other HP LAN Manager
  121.           servers.  See section 4, "Integration with HP
  122.           Systems/Servers".

  127.           Disk mirroring (pairs a hard driver with a duplicated
  128.             backup for data protection if one fails).

  132.           * Peer Services.  Any OS/2 workstation can function as a
  133.           limited server and can be used to share printers or files.

  135.           * DOS LAN Manager client installation over the network.

  137.           * Multiprocessor support

  139.           Toolkit Description:
  140.           --------------------

  142.           As part of the upgrade, Microsoft provides a toolkit with
  143.           XNS, DLC and NBP transports to allow HP LAN Manager 1.0 or
  144.           3Com 3+Open customers to run a mixed environment of LAN
  145.           Manager 1.X server and clients and Microsoft LAN Manager 2.1
  146.           servers and clients.
  147.  
  148.           However, to ensure complete compatibility between clients and
  149.           LAN Manager 2.1 servers, HP recommends reinstalling client
  150.           and server software with LAN Manager 2.1.  In addition, HP
  151.           recommends using one of the standard transports (TCP/IP,
  152.           NetBEUI, or DLC) included with Microsoft LAN Manager 2.1.
  153.           The use of the toolkit transports is not recommended.  For
  154.           customers who do choose to mix HP LAN Manager 1.X servers and
  155.          clients with Microsoft LAN Manager 2.1 servers and clients,
  156.           the toolkit provides the following:

  158.              XNS version 1.2 transport for the Microsoft LAN Manager
  159.                2.1 server and clients.
  160.              Information on obtaining the NBP transport for the
  161.                Microsoft LAN Manager 2.1 server from Compuserve.
  162.              PrEditor (Protocol Editor Script), for installing
  163.                protocols
  164.              Home Directory Utility

  167.           Information specifically for HP LAN Manager 1.X customers

  170.           A separate packet contains information for HP LAN Manager 1.X
  171.           customers on the following subjects:

  179.           INTEGRATION WITH HP SYSTEMS AND SERVERS

  184.           As of October 1991 HP Network Services/MS-DOS 2.1 and HP ARPA
  185.           Services/MS-DOS 2.1 do not support the Microsoft LAN Manager
  186.           2.1 client, but support of this client is planned for May of
  187.           1992 in version B.03.00 of each of these products.

  189.           Some of the applications which use Sockets or NetIPC included
  190.           in NS 2.1 or ARPA 2.1 include:  NewWave Mail, AdvanceMail,
  191.           NewWave Access and Information Access.

  193.           LAN Manager/X server access:
  194.           ----------------------------

  196.           With the TCP/IP transport, Microsoft LAN Manager 2.1 clients
  197.           will be able to access HP LAN Manager/X servers.  However,
  198.           changes in the LAN Manager 2.1 client will require
  199.           modification of HP LAN Manager/X in order to avoid some
  200.           minor incompatibilities with the LM 2.1 client.  These
  201.           modifications to HP LAN Manager/X are planned for first
  202.           quarter 1992.  This new version of HP LAN Manager/X will be
  203.           available in subsequent new shipments, and upgrades will be
  204.           available via the HP Support Subscription Service.

  206.           Access to Resource Sharing on HP 3000 systems
  207.           ---------------------------------------------

  209.           For Microsoft LAN Manager 2.1 DOS clients to access HP 3000
  210.  
  211.           Resource Sharing servers, the Probe module of TCP/IP is
  212.           required on the client PC.  Probe is not included in the
  213.           TCP/IP transport delivered in Microsoft LAN Manager 2.1.  It
  214.           will be available as part of HP Network Services/MS-DOS 2.1
  215.           version B.03.00 which customers will need to purchase for
  216.           Resource Sharing Access.
